Our term working on Education is Special

We are doing an oral history project called “Education is Special” with a man named Joe Peacock from CASBA. Joe is working in collaboration with four schools in Birmingham, these are Victoria, Dame Ellen Pinsent, Mayfield and Fox Hollies schools. Joe introduced himself and showed us some of his previous work with Monyhull hospital in a similar project that he was involved with. We listened to interviews and saw video clips along with a look at the website and media platforms that had been created.

Joe explained to us what we would need be doing for our project which would involve interviewing previous and current staff at Victoria and also interviewing current students. We also needed to gather data in the form of a questionnaire for other students and staff.

We had to learn some interview skills and techniques and also devise some of our own questions for the project. So far we have interviewed several student and staff of Victoria school who explained to us how things were when they were working here and how much things have changed over the years. It has been really interesting finding out about the changes in school and how much things have improved overall for those students here. You can find some clips of the interviews at the bottom of this page.

An exciting bonus is that we are getting to visit the archives of the Library of Birmingham and we are finishing with a presentation at the University of Birmingham later in the year.
